Here are details of further donation projects involving milk and honey. Although I am a vegan myself, there are situations around the world where milk and honey cannot be replaced as easily as they can in our consumer society.

The image shows a donated water buffalo cow; she is vital to farmers and represents a crucial step out of poverty. The farmers rely on her labor and her milk. Unlike our dairy industry—where so much milk is taken from the cow that her natural lifespan is cut from 20 years to just four—in India, cows are considered sacred. Only a small amount of milk is taken, and the calves are allowed to stay with their mothers. Even the dried dung is utilized; it produces a smoldering fire sufficient to brew tea or cook rice, thereby helping to prevent deforestation. We have also donated a water buffalo cow of this kind.

The other image shows ten donated beehives in the Indian state of Bihar, including a year of support and training in hive management. Unlike in our part of the world, the sale of this honey in Bihar can fund a teacher to bring education to rural areas where a school would otherwise be inaccessible to children and unaffordable for their parents. Education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty that is passed down from generation to generation.
